On 26 and 27 November 2013, EVPA headed to Geneva, Switzerland for its 9th Annual Conference.
Over 500 venture philanthropy and social investment experts and practitioners from Europe and beyond came together to discuss the 2013 principal theme ‘Responsible Leadership: Inspire and Act!’
Exchange on what kind of leadership is required to develop real partnerships with grantees and investees, to create a culture of transparency on objectives and impact, and to balance social and financial returns – overall: what leadership is required in our sector from EVPA and its constituency?
A number of experts on the topic of leadership participated and discussed these questions with 120 speakers throughout 4 plenary and 23 breakout sessions. In addition to this, we were delighted to welcome two inspiring keynote speakers who shared with us their experience in the philanthropic sector:
As importantly, and in line with EVPA’s mission to promote the work of practitioners, the conference also provided delegates with inspiring stories and ideas as well as concrete benchmarking sessions on lessons learned, tools and best practices.

We also put a special emphasis on networking opportunities for our participants. In addition to networking lunches and breaks, our online platform allowed them to see who else was coming to Geneva and to connect with other delegates beforehand. This new online community was a remarkable success as the vast majority of the participants activated their profile and used this new tool to build up contacts.
Additionally, several participants of previous EVPA conferences had expressed their desire to find (co-) investments at the conference and asked for more involvement of social purpose organisations. This is why, for the first time ever, EVPA together with a number of member organisations selected 10 European social ventures to present their model during two pitching sessions. Aiming to link investors, philanthropists and social start-ups and thus completed the chain of social venturing and to secure funding for the ideas society really needs, these pitching sessions were well-received and attracted much attention and wide audiences.
