Event report: “A continental breakfast”, London UK

Posted on by EVPA

On May 16th an expert impact investor breakfast was held at the inspiring location The Exchange, London. The event was organised by Audrey Selian, chief executive of EVPA member Artha Iniative – Rianta Capital, and hosted by Ben Metz.

The goal of the event was to share knowledge among impact investors and inform members in the UK space about developments and players in continental Europe.

Speakers included Johannes Weber, founder and managing director of Germany-based Social Venture Fund, a fund focused on impact-driven enterprises in Europe, and Nicolas Hazard, vice-chairman of Groupe SOS and chief executive of Le Comptoir de l’Innovation, an impact-first fund that invests in social enterprises in France.

The main topics discussed included a map of the investors’ landscape in continental Europe and governmental support schemes in different European countries, such as the KfW co-investmemt programme in Germany – that the Social Venture Fund helped to develop – the European Investment Fund, a fund of funds, and support by pension funds in France.

Additionally the group took into account concrete examples of social enterprises that have the potential to grow in other European countries and how investors could work together to facilitate scaling up.

Participants agreed that debating and networking on best practice among European players is important for the growth of the impact investment market. EVPA aims to play an important role in connecting relevant players, providing research and learning opportunities and increasing the knowledge and the acceptance of the benefits of venture philanthropy and impact investment in the charitable sector.

A similar event was hosted on June 13th and 14th by the Bertelsmann Foundation in Berlin – here UK impact investors shared continental European experts’ best practices and current developments in the UK space.
