About the job

The Human Safety Net (THSN) is Generali’s initiative for the community, launched in 2017 and now active in 23 countries. It is driven by a foundation that acts as a centre of competence and works in cooperation with the Business Units of the Generali Group in Europe, Asia and Latin America. Its mission is that of unlocking the potential of vulnerable people, so that they can transform their lives and that of their families and communities. Its programmes’ focus areas are Early Childhood Development and Refugee Livelihoods and are based on a Theory of Change to transform the lives of vulnerable families and refugees. The Human Safety Net provides scaling grants, technical capacity building and a strong network to advance the impact of its community of social enterprises, NGOs and international organizations. As a movement of people helping people, The Human Safety Net ambition is to deploy the company’s international network of 72,000 employees, 150,000 agents and 65 million customers towards shared goals, creating a chain of people helping people, moving beyond traditional grant making models. The Human Safety Net is a vital part of Generali’s sustainability strategy and leverages its networks and expertise in the social sector to drive social innovation in Generali’s core business.

The Human Safety Net is looking for an exceptional professional to join our team as a MEL & Capacity Development Manager and to manage an ambitious programme to increase the impact of our global network of NGO partners. This is a role for an expert, who is passionate about working for social change inside a large organisation, while bringing in extensive experience of monitoring, evaluation, learning and capacity development from the third sector, deep experience of working with NGOs, and excellent writing and communication skills.

There are three focus areas in particular:

  1. Monitoring, Evaluation and Learning – as a community, THSN is committed to monitoring and evaluating its work, always seeking to learn and develop its impact. NGOs engage in a quarterly and annual reporting process to build up a picture of the status, reach, activity, learning of every grant.
  2. Capacity development – THSN seeks to not only have a positive impact in the lives of its ultimate beneficiaries, but also to strengthen the NGO organisations that provide this support. Capacity development activities help to increase the reach, depth and quality of the work of the network.
  3. Community data – Generali has built its history on the idea of community and its declinations. The Human Safety Net extends Generali’s purpose to the most vulnerable in our communities and every year THSN collects data from all Business Units on the community spent, while supporting on planning.

THSN has made rapid progress in the first three years of its life to establish processes and activities which benefit the network and demonstrate the commitment to impact, learning and development. The objective of the MEL & Capacity Development Manager is now to build upon these foundations, to further engage NGO partners and THSN teams in 23 countries, and to ensure that all the work of THSN is firmly embedded in a culture of impact, learning and development.

Key responsibilities of the role are

Monitoring, evaluation and learning

  • Ensure the smooth operation of the quarterly and annual reporting process which leads to a suite of monitoring dashboards.
  • Ensure that data processed is timely, accurate and complete.
  • In collaboration with the wider THSN community, undertake regular synthesis to draw out learning and a deeper understanding of the needs, risks and opportunities within THSN.
  • Liaise closely with colleagues to ensure that MEL data and conclusions contributes to both internal and external communication (eg. THSN activity report), the wider work of the programme team, and ultimately the strategy and direction of the Foundation.
  • Provide ready-to-use content for communications purposes, translating complex MEL or research concepts in clear language that works for non-technical audiences (e.g. blogs)
  • Oversee a process of continual improvement of MEL processes, ensuring that they are both fit for purpose (given the constantly evolving needs and growth of THSN) and feasible/viable/useful for the NGO partners that participate.
  • Act as a source of expertise and support to colleagues seeking to strengthen MEL within specific projects and programmes across the work of the Foundation.
  • As and when agreed with the Head of Programmes, commission specific deep evaluations in partnership with lead global universities and research centres.

Capacity development

  • Build an evolving picture of the capacity development needs of THSN NGO partners.
  • Design and manage an annual capacity development programme of activities which meets the needs to NGO partners and supports a process of ongoing growth in terms of reach and impact. Ensure that this draws upon the full range of support (ie. includes non-financial support and integrates Generali’s business knowhow) that Generali and its partners can offer.
  • Oversee the delivery of the programme in collaboration with other members of the programme team, drawing in external specialists and support as appropriate.
  • Provide strong content support to the design of the NetWorks annual conference to ensure that it also contributes to NGO capacity development where feasible.
  • Support NGOs to more deeply embed MEL approaches into their work, increasing their focus on impact over activity alone, and improving their capacity over time to report reliably against appropriate indicators of impact.

Community data

  • Coordinate the annual community data reporting of Generali business units, liaising with relevant colleagues at country level
  • Provide relevant data to inform multi-year plans and strategies of THSN countries
  • Guide non-financial data collection (e.g. volunteering), internal reporting and KPIs
  • Meet reporting deadlines and providing final data for internal and external communications
  • Regular alignment with Sustainability department on ESG reporting, Dow Jones Index and others
