About The Stone Family Foundation

The Stone Family Foundation aims to fund innovative, sustainable and entrepreneurial approaches to water and sanitation internationally, and to major social problems in the UK. Their vision is to be a pioneering and disruptive influence, constantly in search of new and better ways to solve entrenched problems.

The Foundation was established in 2005 by John Stone and his wife, Vanessa, with the aim to help people out of poverty. John is an entrepreneur with a successful 40-year career in financial services. His background as a venture philanthropist has been adopted in the business-like approach of the Foundation.

Water and Sanitation in the developing world forms 80% of their funding commitment, and they are one of the leading advocates of market-based solutions in the sector. Their UK portfolios on Mental Health and Disadvantaged Youth make up 20% of funding and have a different strategy.

Following a venture philanthropy approach in WASH portfolio, they are an engaged funder, provide more than just finance (i.e. non-financial support) and also look to invest in the ecosystem in which enterprises operate.

Within the Foundation’s WASH portfolio, they work in four areas:

1. Safe water enterprises

2. Urban sanitation services

3. Waste to resource

4. Rural sanitation in Cambodia

They provide support in two complementary ways:

- Direct support to enterprises; where they make a grant or investment, and/or provide non-financial support for issues such as sales and marketing, fundraising and strategy and business model development.

- Support to national or global initiatives benefiting multiple enterprises and the sector; such as producing research and evidence, supporting access to finance, strengthening the role of technology as an enabler and collaborating and coordinating with other funders.
