EVPA Newsletter January 2020 - Foreword by our CEO Steven Serneels

With the beginning of 2020 we also enter a new decade. A decade where we want to mainstream the ‘impact’ dimension in all financial transactions, and make ‘sustainability’ part of every decision. This is both ambitious, as the gap to realise the SDGs is still wide, and doable, if we see where we come from. Depending on how strict you take the definition, the European Venture Philanthropy & Impact Investing market has grown the last decade from €200 million to €2 billion (EVPA), or even to $72 billion (GIIN, including the Investors with Impact).

As EVPA, we will take stock again in 2020 conducting our bi-annual market survey, but what is sure is that we have been moving from a marginal idea (“What is venture philanthropy and impact investing?”) to a more advanced (“How to effectively apply VP/SI?”) and more sophisticated discussion (complementary roles of Investors for Impact and Investors with Impact).

Successful collaboration amongst all the actors in the impact space will definitely be one of the crucial elements to realise the above ambition in the years to come.

As EVPA, we want to further contribute to the above by offering you a space, where:

  • You can collaborate more with other members, both similar type of members (funds, foundations, …), as across the spectrum of capital, or when sharing the same thematic interest
  • You can reach out to other stakeholders, such as investors with impact, corporates, and public actors
  • You can benefit from the growing opportunities offered by the European Commission, such as the EaSI Programme, the European Social Fund and, in the near future, InvestEU

With over 300 members now, and a second consecutive year of almost 20% growth, we are a broad and big enough community to offer you these opportunities and support you to make your plans happen. Better collaboration with complementary networks should further enhance your effectiveness and enrich your experience so we can jointly realize the ambition by 2030.

In 2020 and beyond, we hope to remain your preferred community of Investors for Impact, where you learn, share, progress as well as collaborate with others.

On behalf of the EVPA team, I would like to wish you a happy, impactful and collaborative 2020!

My best regards,

Steven Serneels,

CEO & Board member
