Ashley Metz Cummings and Lisa Hehenberger
June 2011
Through examining case studies of private equity firms from several European countries, this publication explores three possible models of venture philanthropy engagement and provides examples of best practice. The PE industry is increasingly interested in becoming engaged in venture philanthropy activities. This paper identifies a number of motives for PE firms to become involved in venture philanthropy, including the desire to give back to their communities, to help employees develop skills such as judgement, resilience and social competences, and establishing them as a positive social actor.

ESTABLISHING A VENTURE PHILANTHROPY ORGANISATION IN EUROPE A Practical Guide
Luciano Balbo, Lisa Hehenberger, Deirdre Mortell and Pieter Oostlander
November 2010
This is the second edition of a working paper that was first published in 2008. Its goal is to assist start-up or early-stage Venture Philanthropy organisations (VPOs) in Europe by providing an insight into “what works” in a European context. It provides a definition of VP, an account for its evolution and latest developments, and a practical guide to how to set up and run a VP organisation. The new edition takes into account the enhanced experience of existing VPOs, the emergence of new VPOs or new financing instruments and the changes in the financial and economic climates in Europe and around the globe in the past years.

STRATEGIES FOR FOUNDATIONS When, why and how to use Venture Philanthropy
Ashley Metz Cummings and Lisa Hehenberger
October 2010
This paper investigates the venture philanthropy strategies of foundations. We identified six strategies of foundations engaging in venture philanthropy and explain them through case studies of four foundations based in four European countries. We find that there is a spectrum of engagement models for foundations and that even the same foundation may employ various strategies to fit their individual needs and goals. To most foundations, VP serves as a complement to existing practices and only in one case as an alternative.

DISTANCE LEARNING Managing International Investments
Andrew Milner
October 2009
High engagement and the provision of non-financial support are perhaps the chief distinguishing features of venture philanthropy. How are these things achieved when the investee is in another country, even on another continent? This paper addresses these questions through the experience of a number of EVPA’s member organisations with international investments and asks how they managed them, what problems they encountered and what were the main lessons they learned from them.

PRAXIS European Venture Philanthropy in Practice
Kimberly Ochs
February 2009
It belongs to the tasks of philanthropists to contemplate what might be learnt from others, from practice ‘elsewhere’. With its focus on current and emerging practices in Europe, PRAXIS provides an introduction to, rather than an analysis of, the different applications of engaged philanthropy in a European context. The fifteen featured case studies profile the practices and business models of selected organisations in Europe, which follow the principles of venture philanthropy in their support of projects and social entrepreneurs. Organisations profiled in this publication were selected from the membership of EVPA to reflect a wide scope of practices across Europe.
